Life coaching has no entry requirement of any kind. No credential, no prior career, no regulator, no insurance requirement in most markets. A person can decide on Monday and take payment on Friday, and many do.

The thing to understand is that ease of entry and ease of success are inversely related here, and for the same reason. The absence of a gate is what lets you in, and it is also what lets in everyone you will be compared against.

With one in hand this is among the fastest niches to start: demand is enormous, the buyer decides quickly, and nobody needs the category explained to them.

Without one it is harder than life coaching rather than easier, which surprises people. The absence of a credential is conspicuous here in a way it is not in a general coaching context, and it comes up early in conversations.

Women's health has no formal gate and a real substantive one. Buyers want credibility in the specific area — perimenopause, fertility, postnatal recovery — and general coaching training does not supply it.

Lived experience of a life stage counts heavily, more than in most niches, which shortens the path considerably for the right person.

What extends it is the category education. A buyer in business coaching knows what they are buying; here a meaningful part of the first conversation establishes that this kind of support exists at all, and that slows the early months.

ADHD and neurodivergent coaching has no credential requirement and a genuine substantive one, and for the right person the substantive one is already met.

This is the clearest case in coaching of lived experience functioning as qualification. Clients state it directly: a coach who has built systems for their own brain is more credible than one with a certificate and no experience of it.

The good news for operators is that this gate feels invisible from the inside. Coaches with genuine operating history routinely undervalue it because their own experience feels unremarkable to them.

Executive coaching has the deepest entry requirement in the profession and it is cumulative rather than singular: a senior track record, usually an ICF PCC, professional indemnity insurance, references, and case studies.

Most of that is table stakes rather than differentiation. Having it does not win you work; not having it means the conversation never happens.

Treat this as where a career arrives rather than where one starts. Coaches who want to end up here should be entering leadership coaching now and accumulating the pieces.
